For his entire life, Dugu Zhuo had been toyed with by heaven. His cultivation had been destroyed, his familial bonds had been severed, his friends had passed on, and he was burdened with the crime of patricide. Even his one and only true love, Ye Zhou, had been killed and his soul shattered.

Having lost all hope, he walked every corner of the world accompanied by a spiritual jade containing a single fragment of Ye Zhou’s soul, wishing to find the other pieces so they could be with one another in a next life.

However, one day, near the end of his life, he wandered into an illusion and suddenly saw Ye Zhou being chased by several beasts.

When he slew those beasts in one move, a strange sound rang by his ears.

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received 3 low-grade spirit stones.”

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received a secret manual, the Reverse Sword Form.

“Ding! For slaying a monster, you’ve received a rare healing item, the Spirit Replenishing Herb.”

“Ding! You’ve reached Level 1 and regained 1% of your cultivation.”

And the Ye Zhou he had just “saved” waved his sword at him furiously, yelling at him, “How dare you steal my monster!”

Dugu Zhuo: ?

In the VR game Nine Heavens, Ye Zhou met an eccentric player called Dugu Zhuo.

He didn’t understand common sense, he didn’t know the controls, he was never offline, and he often gazed at Ye Zhou with hidden depths in his eyes.

Ye Zhou only thought he had taken a good-looking little disciple, helping him level up step by step, and after flirting for a long time they married each other in the game.

Just when Ye Zhou was considering meeting Dugu Zhuo in the real world, there was a system notification from the game:

[Player Yi Ye Pian Zhou has triggered the final storyline, ‘Sword Tomb’, and unlocked the final boss, Dugu Zhuo.]

Ye Zhou: …

What a coincidence, that was his husband’s name!

Dugu Zhuo: gong, Ye Zhou: shou

One sentence summary: Accidentally took the final boss as a disciple.

Theme: With unwavering conviction, one can overcome all obstacles.

Translator’s summary:

by the way, part of that summary is inaccurate

Dugu Zhuo plays an RPG about his backstory as therapy, while players constantly complain about him being overpowered.

  1. Hey mourningcrow!

Got really excite when I saw the email notification that you started a new novel! You’re one of my favourite translators – and I think amongst the very best – and on top of that the book you chose to share became one of my 3 all time most beloved danmeis.

Really looking forward to this new journey you’ll graciously take us all on. I might, however, hold off until you’ve finished translating before I begin.

So I guess I’ll see you all on the other end, whenever that might be!

      1. Devil Venerable Also Wants to Know (obviously haha), MDZS and Wushuang/Peerless in no order in particular. I read historical/wx/xx/xh almost exclusively, so prolly don’t know about many excellent modern/sci-fi novels.

How about you, do you have any danmeis you consider to be your most beloved?

          1. Ah, a person of culture, I see! (and I’m not at all tooting my own horn here.. lol) Yeah love Qian Qiu as well, though had to give the spot to Wushuang in the end since they are, for me, the very epitome of a bickering couple which is just the king of tags if you ask me (I know you didn’t but it’s not stopping me apparently)… oh gosh and I think it’s actually time for a re-read!
